1st round was shot.

In June 2023, Rheinkalk GmbH, a company of the globally active Lhoist Group, commissioned THYSSEN SCHACHTBAU with the construction and operation of an underground limestone quarry at the Flandersbach plant. The first round was shot on 12.12.2023.

The Lhoist Group is headquartered in Belgium and is the world's largest manufacturer of limestone and dolomite products. The Flandersbach plant of Rheinkalk GmbH, located near Wülfrath in the district of Mettmann, includes the Rohdenhaus quarry. The previously purely surface extraction of limestone is to be supplemented by underground extraction in future. To this end, underground limestone extraction will be developed from the existing open-cast mine over an initial period of three years. The operation of the open-cast mine will continue during this period and beyond. The collection of all technical and operational data as well as a high degree of flexibility in order to be able to react quickly to the respective situation is of particular importance. A start was made on 12.12.2023 with the first blasting work. Thorough preparation ensured a smooth process.

THYSSEN SCHACHTBAU has formed a joint venture with German Mining Solution GmbH, which has already worked on the construction of the access portals on site in the past, and is carrying out the work together.

For THYSSEN SCHACHTBAU, the contract is also special from a historical perspective. A forerunner of today's Rheinkalk GmbH is the Rheinische Kalksteinwerke of August Thyssen, which has been operating near Wülfrath since 1903, the same August Thyssen who laid the foundations for today's THYSSEN SCHACHTBAU GMBH in 1871 with the company Thyssen & Co. GmbH in Mülheim an der Ruhr laid the foundation stone for today's THYSSEN SCHACHTBAU GMBH, which is still in family hands.
